The backstory to the proposal

david January 5th, 2007

I didn’t write about this earlier because all this happened before I started this blog. But I wanted to blog it anyway because it’s quite a fun story and would be something interesting to recall when Pei Chyi and I are older.

Although Pei Chyi, me and her parents had already accepted that Pei Chyi and I would get married some time in the future, I had decided to make sure to ask for her parents’ permission formally in advanced. And so several months ago (probably back in July), I had the opportunity to speak to Pei Chyi’s parents alone. Nervously, I told them that I really cared for Pei Chyi and that I wanted to make sure it was ok with them that I marry Pei Chyi.

Auntie and Uncle said yes, reminded me to take care of her and told me to not rush into it.

Great! I was really happy. It went smoother than I thought it would go, and the looks on their faces made me feel that they were quite pleased with it.

Later that evening, I was speaking to Pei Chyi on the phone when she said,

“Dear, Mom told me something earlier…”

Auntie had told her everything and basically spoilt my surprise. Oh well.

It was probably my fault because I had forgotten to tell them I wasn’t about to propose yet, so please keep it a secret. But at the same time I have a feeling that Auntie was too happy to contain it inside anyway.

With the cat out of the bag as well it wasn’t going to be much of a surprise if I had proposed soon after that. Plus I couldn’t afford a ring at that time anyway. So I decided to wait till Pei Chyi had sort of forgotten about it before catching her by surprise.

Unfortunately, the silly girl couldn’t let it go. She kept hinting to me about wedding rings and kept saying things like it wasn’t the the value of the wedding ring that was important, and suggested to just get engaged with a more affordable (i.e. “cheap”) ring. She went on and on about it till it got me quite annoyed. In the end I had to put a stop to it by telling her that I didn’t want to hear another peep out of it.

Thankfully, Pei Chyi finally forgot about the impending proposal and sort of resigned herself to wait till when I could afford the ring.

Little did she know that I had been plotting all along and had bought the ring quietly under her nose… In hindsight, I’m glad that I didn’t relent to her insistence of quickly getting engaged. With her constant hinting, it almost felt that I would be proposing because I was being compelled and pressured to do so. Plus I’m happy I waited till I could afford the Estrella ring because the first things her cousin and my aunties asked was, “How many carats?” “Got certificate or not?” and the very blunt “Big or not?”

Also, it was quite tough for me to surprise Pei Chyi with my proposal with all the extra obstacles. Fortunately, it went off as planned and now we can both look back at these events and laugh about them.

It’s official! We’re engaged!

The RingPei Chyi said YES! The ring is around her finger. We’re officially engaged!

Mission accomplished for me – she was caught completely by surprise. And what a miracle, the ring was a perfect fit! We immediately got the ring engraved with today’s date to remember this memorable day.

We’re so happy right now and we’ve shared our joy with some of you already. Thanks to everyone who’s sent congratulatory messages and for all your support. We don’t know when the wedding will be yet, but it’ll most likely only be in 2008. Subscribe to this blog’s feed to find out when.

We’re heading off to Penang for a short holiday. More pictures and updates when we get back.

The Proposal

After three and a half years of going steady with Pei Chyi, I’m going to ask her to be my wife tomorrow.

This is one of the biggest decisions that I’ll ever make in my life, but in many ways, it’s one of the easiest. I feel completely at ease when I’m with her. She’s my best friend and my lover. She’s my soulmate and I know that we’re meant to be together.

Then again, knowing that we’re meant to be together doesn’t make me feel any less nervous about proposing. I’ve planned everything out and I really hope that I surprise her.

This little guy will be helping me out when I propose tomorrow.

Popping the big question

david December 21st, 2006

I’ve been thinking of how to pop the big question. Gosh, I’m going to do it next week! That’s almost no time left! *realisation panic*

The more I think of it, the more daunting the task seems. I want it to be memorable you know. Of course, I could get down on one knee, present the ring and just ask, “Will you marry me?”, but that approach seems a bit tired and clichéd. Plus, I’ll probably be nervous as hell and she’ll guess I’m up to something a mile away.

Another issue is that I don’t really like the box which the ring came in. I tried looking for a ring box, but couldn’t find any so far. So scratch any ideas that involve opening up the box to reveal a ring inside.

I’ve narrowed my options to something that is pretty sweet I think. I admit, it’s not the most creative marriage proposal ever, but it fits the bill of being sweet and memorable. I’ll have more details in my next post. All I can say for now is that it’ll involve a teddy bear…

The Ring

Here’s a peek at what everyone is curious about – the engagement ring.

These are studio photos of the ring I bought for her. Nothing too fancy, and definitely nothing too expensive. The day when I pop the question is coming! Hope she likes it!

All the cool kids blog…

david December 2nd, 2006

… and so I thought it would be great if we have a blog for the wedding too. That is, if Pei Chyi says yes when I propose…

Last Saturday, Pei Chyi was out of town and I took the opportunity to go buy her an engagement ring. I still don’t know when I’m going to pop the question – waiting for the best time – but I’ve got one or two ideas already.

We’ve knew that we’d get married for some time now but due to ‘financial constraints’ I did not buy the ring until now. I wanted to give Pei Chyi the best that I could give and so I got her a very beautiful Estrella diamond ring. I’ll post photos when I manage to take a nice picture of it.

Anyway, Pei Chyi’s waited for so long now which is really good for me, because I hope I catch her completely by surprise when I pop the question. This means that this blog, and the ring especially, is still a secret – so don’t breathe a word to anyone! Stay tuned…
