Our Story

Our story told by Pei Chyi and by David:

Pei Chyi

We actually first met when I gave Dave and his parents a tour of the Monash University campus in Sunway back in January 2001. We knew each other but never really hung out together as we were in different classes – Dave did Communications while I was majoring in Business and Commerce. We were never really friends, just the hi-bye type. Also, I think he avoided me at first because he told me before that he thought I was kinda loud.

I then left for Melbourne in February 2002 and it was not until the end of that year that I came to know that Dave was going to Melbourne too. I met him at a Monash hosted event for students preparing to leave for Australia and gave him my number in Melbourne. Of course, he never called, and later came to know that he actually threw my number away.

Back in Melbourne, during lunch with my childhood friend, Joanie, I found out she also knew Dave! We were talking about my final year subject that I found really difficult. She mentioned that it just happens a friend of hers was doing it too, and was having trouble looking for the textbook. I then asked her who it was and when she mentioned “David Wang”, the first thing I asked her was:

“Does he have spikey hair, and is kinda short?”

I then found out that Joanie’s mom and Dave’s mom went to school together and that Joanie had known Dave since he was little. Such a small, small world!! I really owe it to Joanie for indirectly helping to bring us together. I am really thankful to God for blessing us for such a perfect timing :)

I got Dave’s number in Australia from Joanie and sent him a SMS asking him to guess who I was. That led to a few more SMS-es and a few phone calls and we finally met outside the Caulfield campus library. I am still at a lost as to why I was daring enough to send him that SMS, but I think it was because I found comfort in knowing that there was another fellow Malaysian in a foreign country with me (and also because I thought he was kinda cute). After inviting him over to my place for dinner with my house mate a couple of times, we started to call each other more often and in May 2003 we officially were going out. The last two and a half months in Melbourne were fantastic!

Three and a half years later, and a more prosperous looking Dave, we are engaged and already planning our wedding for 2008! It wasn’t a relationship that was without its ups and downs. We have our arguments but they are usually forgiven and forgotten before the day is over. The relationship transformed into something more serious and solid when we decided in our 2nd year of our courtship (in 2005) to purchase an apartment together.

Dave is my best friend, my soul mate, my everything and we complete each other. I find in him peace, I find in him comfort, I find in him love. I love you David, yesterday, today, tomorrow, forever.

I remember once while I was really stressed out and pretty much in a foul mood the whole week (it was exam week, I think), Pei Chyi just dropped by my house after work un-announced to give me a hug. That in itself meant a lot, but that small gesture meant even more because in my rotten mood, I had got into an argument with her earlier that afternoon.

Then there was another time when I was going through a rough patch at work – I was working late, frustrated and stressed out – she does it again. Pei Chyi knew I hadn’t been having dinner properly so she shows up un-announced at my office with a sandwich and a drink.

I love this girl.

She’s right, I didn’t really get along with her the first year in uni (and yes, I really did throw her number away before leaving for Melbourne). I honestly never thought she was ‘my type’ and spent my time chasing all the wrong girls. But I also think she changed during the time when I first met her and when I met up with her again in Melbourne.

There must have been some divine intervention as well. God heard me when I asked Him to lead me to the right girl. I didn’t realise it the first time and so thank God for arranging the circumstances so that we met again for the second time in Melbourne.

Spending all that time with her in Melbourne, I got to really know her this time. I saw Pei Chyi’s caring nature, her down-to-earth character that just made me feel totally relaxed, and how she accepts me for who I am, warts and all. I couldn’t help but fall in love with her.

I’ve found in her a soulmate and best friend and there’s no one else I’d rather be with. Asking Pei Chyi to marry me was one of the biggest decisions in my life but also one of the easiests.

She said yes of course, and so here we are now, together on our journey through life, forever and always.
